Asheville Street Services shifts snow/ice removal focus to neighborhoods

The City’s Street Services division continues to work 24-hour shifts to clear our roads of snow and ice. Secondary, or neighborhood, streets are the focus now that main thoroughfares have been cleared. Crews worked plows through streets last night, as they have every night since Winter Storm Jonas brought 13.5 inches of snow to Asheville last weekend.

Snow, ice and black ice are still present on many secondary roads but work crews are clearing them as quickly as possible. Travel with caution on these roads is still advised.

The City reminds residents that on-street parking may make it difficult or in some cases prohibit access by the larger plow/spreader equipment.

Residents within the City limits are encouraged to call if they see large patches ice or snow that need treatment by the City, 828-259-5852 or 828-251-1122. Bear in mind that this number applies only to streets maintained by the City of Asheville.

Downtown parking

All City parking lots have been plowed and treated.

The City’s parking garages resumed normal operations this morning. Parking enforcement and meter collection also resume today where it is safe.

Trash and recycling collection

The City of Asheville’s Sanitation Division started trash collection on Tuesday’s route at 10 a.m. today. Some roads are still snow covered and extremely slippery. Those we can’t collect today will be collected on the next regular collection day, Feb. 2.

Customers whose collection day was Monday will have their trash and recycling picked up on Friday this week. Normally there is no Friday collection. All routes are serviced Monday through Thursday.

Tuesday through Thursday collection schedules remain on track for the rest of this week.

Brush collection has been cancelled for the week of Jan. 25. Collection will occur on the next regular collection week.

ART bus service

Asheville Redefines Transit (ART) bus service resumed Monday, though some stops are not being served due to icy conditions. For up-to-date details, visit ART’s Service Alerts page or access NextBus or dial 828-253-5691 and press #5.

Parks & Recreation

Parks and greenways will remain closed today. Much progress was made yesterday in snow removal but with the forming of ice most of them had to redone Monday and continue today.

Montford Center opened for snow care at 10 am. Stephens Lee Center will open at noon for regular programming. All other centers closed.

Public Works crews have been using a front end loader to transfer snow piled up in the Central Business District to the McCormick Field parking lot. Here’s the snow piled up from those efforts so far.
